MIDI to Csound PPC

New February 21, 2007

MIDI to Csound is a program that converts Standard MIDI files into Csound scores. MIDI is, of course, the ubiquitous standard for communication between electronic music devices. Csound is a software-based music and sound synthesis system that can turn a textual list of note events (a Csound score) into an audio file. Csound is free software (i.e. "open source") available from http://csound.sourceforge.net/.

MIDI to Csound was written by Bill Gardner while a member of the Music and Cognition Group at the MIT Media Lab. (He was also a contributor to the original Mac port of Csound). The MIDI file parser was written by Tim Thompson.

MIDI to Csound PPC, version 1.1.1 runs on Macintosh computers using System 7 through MacOS 9. It will also run on MacOS X in the Classic environment. The versions of this program floating around on other internet sites were compiled for 68K Macs (i.e. those made between 1984 and about 1994). This version has been updated to run natively on PowerPC Macs - ("acclerated for PowerMac" as they used to say).

I hope to produce a version of MIDI to Csound in the near future that will be ported to run natively on MacOS X (a "Carbonized" application).
